East Timor

"Alkatiri blames Australia for his ousting"

East Timor's disgraced former prime minister Mari Alkatiri has blamed Australia for his downfall.

In an interview with Fairfax newspapers, Dr Alkatiri says he believes he was targeted by Australia because of his tough negotiations over oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea.

Dr Alkatiri says he has no doubt that the Australian media were trying to demonise him, and his downfall was an orchestrated plot.

Anyone who has read these accusation by the former PM of East Timor blaming Australia for his ousting must be rolling on the floor with mirth today!

There is no doubt that the availability of oil and gas under the Timor Sea is a real reason why Australia is vitally interested in the region and wanting to ensure stability there. The question really is whether anyone else in the East Timorese government would be more or less useful than the former PM?

Just to oust the PM and then take the risk of who would emerge in the ensuing power struggle is frankly a high level poker game and I am not sure that our current Foreign Minister is up to the game!
